What Kind of Maintenance Does a Septic Tank Require?
Regular maintenance keeps your septic system functioning optimally and compliant with Part 8 of the Ontario Building Code. Though it may not top your weekend to-do list, a bit of routine care ensures a healthier system and a more pleasant living environment.
Pumping Intervals
Most residential septic tanks should be pumped out approximately every 3 to 5 years. Over time, solids accumulate as sludge at the bottom of the tank. Once these solids exceed one-third of the tank’s volume, it’s time for a pump-out. Staying on top of this schedule can help prevent costly repairs down the road.
Effluent Filter Maintenance
Many modern septic tanks include an effluent filter. This filter traps small particles before they enter the leaching bed. Generally, it should be cleaned once or twice a year to maintain proper flow and prevent clogs.
